Supported Absorbed Dose Conversions

Our calculator supports full bi-directional conversion. You can seamlessly convert the legacy base unit (Rad) to any of the following standard units and metric prefixes, or vice versa:

  • Rad Family: Rad (rad) and Millirad (mrad).
  • SI Unit Prefixes (to/from Rad): Gray (Gy), Exagray (EGy), Petagray (PGy), Teragray (TGy), Gigagray (GGy), Megagray (MGy), Kilogray (kGy), Hectogray (hGy), Dekagray (daGy), Decigray (dGy), Centigray (cGy), Milligray (mGy), Microgray (µGy), Nanogray (nGy), Picogray (pGy), Femtogray (fGy), and Attogray (aGy).
  • Physical Energy Ratios: Joule/kilogram (J/kg), Joule/gram (J/g), Joule/centigram (J/cg), and Joule/milligram (J/mg).

Understanding Absorbed Dose Units

The Gray (Gy) and Joules

The Gray is the official International System of Units (SI) derived unit for ionizing radiation dose. It is strictly defined as the absorption of one joule of radiation energy per kilogram of matter. Therefore, mathematically, 1 Gray = 1 Joule/kilogram. For extremely precise calculations at the microscopic level, metric prefixes like the Microgray and Joules per milligram are often utilized.

The Rad (Radiation Absorbed Dose)

The Rad is a CGS (centimeter-gram-second) unit that predates the Gray. It is defined as the absorption of 100 ergs of energy per gram of tissue. While the Gray is the modern standard, the Rad is still extensively used in the United States in clinical environments and regulatory limits.

Converting Between Gray and Rad

The relationship between the SI unit and the legacy unit is very straightforward: 1 Gray equals 100 Rad. Interestingly, this makes the Centigray (cGy) mathematically identical to the Rad (1 cGy = 1 rad), which is why Centigray is frequently used in modern radiotherapy to transition smoothly from legacy Rad-based protocols.

How to Use This Converter

  1. Select the unit you want to convert From using the first dropdown menu.
  2. Enter the numerical value of the absorbed dose you wish to calculate.
  3. Select the target unit you want to convert To in the second dropdown menu.
  4. The accurately converted dose will be generated instantly in the result box below.
