Supported Radioactivity Conversions

Our calculator supports seamless bi-directional conversion. You can convert the base SI unit (Becquerel) to any of the following prefixes and specific units, or convert back to Becquerel:

  • SI Unit Prefixes (to/from Becquerel): Terabecquerel (TBq), Gigabecquerel (GBq), Megabecquerel (MBq), Kilobecquerel (kBq), and Millibecquerel (mBq).
  • Curie Family (Legacy Units): Curie (Ci), Kilocurie (kCi), Millicurie (mCi), Microcurie (µCi), Nanocurie (nCi), and Picocurie (pCi).
  • Other Historical Units: Rutherford (Rd).
  • Decay Count Rates: One/second (1/s), Disintegrations/second (dps), and Disintegrations/minute (dpm).

Understanding Radiation Activity Units

The Becquerel (Bq)

The Becquerel is the official SI derived unit of radioactivity. It is defined simply as one nucleus decay per second. Because one decay per second is a very small amount of activity, metric prefixes like Megabecquerel (MBq) and Gigabecquerel (GBq) are commonly used in medical and industrial applications.

The Curie (Ci)

The Curie is a legacy non-SI unit originally defined by the activity of one gram of Radium-226. One Curie is a massive amount of radioactivity, equivalent to exactly 37 billion decays per second (3.7 × 1010 Bq). Smaller fractions like the Millicurie (mCi) and Microcurie (µCi) are routinely used in nuclear medicine protocols.

Disintegrations and Count Rates

Units like Disintegrations/second (dps) and One/second (1/s) are physically identical to the Becquerel (1 dps = 1 Bq). However, Disintegrations/minute (dpm) is often used in laboratory settings (such as wipe tests and liquid scintillation counting). To convert dpm to Becquerels, you simply divide the value by 60.

How to Use This Converter

  1. Select the unit you are converting From in the first dropdown menu.
  2. Type the number of your radiation activity into the input field.
  3. Choose the unit you want to convert To in the second dropdown menu.
  4. The accurately converted radioactivity level will display automatically in the result box.
